Ms. Kayla Bird named assistant principal at The Sullivans School
YOKOSUKA, JAPAN – Department of Defense Education Activity – Pacific East District Superintendent Dr. Jacqueline Ferguson is pleased to announce the selection of Ms. Kayla Bird as assistant principal at The Sullivans School.
Ms. Kayla Bird is proud to call Northwest Florida home. She began her career in education in 2010 in Escambia County, Florida, where she taught first grade. She later relocated to North Carolina, serving as the founding assistant principal of a charter school. Following this role, she returned to the classroom as a third-grade teacher before advancing to the position of assistant principal at an Early College.
In late 2023, Ms. Bird joined DoDEA at The Sullivans. She later transitioned to Yokosuka Primary School, where she taught first grade. During her time there, she also served as a Focus Collaboration Facilitator, Teacher Leader, and Sunshine Committee Chair. Additionally, she contributed to regional initiatives as a Teacher Navigator for the Pacific-East Working Committee on Innovative Teaching Practices.
Ms. Bird holds a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with endorsements in English as a Second Language and Reading from the University of West Florida (2010). She earned a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the same university in 2013, and later received a Master’s in School Administration from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 2018.
In recognition of her leadership and commitment to student success, Ms. Bird was named a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction in 2024 for her work at the Early College. Throughout her career, she has prioritized building strong, supportive relationships with students, staff, and families. She remains deeply committed to fostering academic growth and a positive school culture.
Ms. Bird is excited to return to The Sullivans School and continue her leadership journey as a Dolphin, serving the Yokosuka Complex community with dedication and enthusiasm.
